Dieter Hopf - La Portentosa - 1983

The Hopf family dedicated themselves to the construction of stringed instruments many years ago. Already in 1669, the name “Hopf” was mentioned in a written document. The tradition of making instruments has continued until today and at present time, Dieter Hopf is maintaining the heritage. Dieter Hopf was born in 1936 and lives in Taunusstein since 1949. At first he started training in Mittenwald to become a violin maker. Afterward, he turned to guitar building and passed his master’s examination in 1968. His instruments have been, and are still played by many famous guitarists.

On this beautiful guitar, built in 1983, the top is made of mountain spruce, and the back and sides are made of Brazilian rosewood with exceptionally beautiful vintage patterns. It is in almost new condition and portrays all the best features of Dieter Hopf’s famous “La Portentosa” model. The bridge is a specialty, as it is artistically perforated together with the deck, which helps the guitar’s special projection.

The label is hand signed and the very interesting bracing pattern is unique in the classical guitar world. Thanks to structural innovations, this guitar achieves enormous volume with great clarity and “sustain”, making it particularly suitable for concert performances as well as chamber music concerts.
